Sickness in September

It seems like my little family can't stay away from illnesses this month! Since the beginning of school we've had a weird cold and now a stomach bug going through our house. I'm feeling a bit off, but so far I've only had 1 vomiting child so far--fingers crossed!

It got me thinking about how I've been slacking on my usual immune boosting habits, so I thought I'd do a quick post before I collapse. After all, being healthy is part of staying beautiful, right?

Many of you have probably been told to take Echinacea, but this can be a double-edged sword. Yes, it can help to give your immune system a boost, but if you take it every day without a break it will actually become ineffective. I've heard different suggestions, but they all seem to suggest taking it for a few weeks, then taking a week or two off and repeating this cycle.

My favorite immune boosting supplements are:

1. Probiotics - This is absolutely my number 1 immune-boosting tactic. Many germs come in through the digestive system and if you can stop them before they get further than your digestive system then you may be in great shape! A good quality probiotic is a must because lower quality ones won't do a thing.

2. Odorless garlic - Taking odorless garlic daily can assist your immune system, decrease your blood pressure, etc. And odorless tablets or soft gels shouldn't give you awful breath, so no worries! It's important to use a quality product because it will make a difference in how effective they are.

3. Daily multi-vitamin - It's really important to make sure you get all of your regular vitamins and minerals to keep your body in top shape. I use one that's a tad bit more complex than the regular drugstore brands, but that doesn't include iron. I'm chronically anemic (gotta love genetics), but can't tolerate any form of iron with the exception of getting it naturally through good foods (dark, leafy greens, meat, etc.).

4. Water - Staying hydrated is super important for every aspect of your health. I drink a lot of water throughout the day. Actually, I don't really drink much else other than decaf coffee or tea on occasion!

5. B vitamins - B vitamins are great for many reasons, but one of my favorite benefits is the fact that they assist you in forming healthy red blood cells and make you feel a bit more alert or less exhausted.

Those are just a few of my favorite things to take when flu season starts to rear its ugly head. I have to be careful about getting sick too often because I'm allergic to almost every antibiotic and I tend to get sinus and chest infections very easily. And I don't know about you, but I don't have time to get sick!
